2. Chamber-Music Academy Hohenstaufen 29. Mar — 1. Apr 2013

In April 2012 the first Hohenstaufen International Chamber-Music Academy took place—a new element of our festival about which we are delighted.

Based on what we have learned in the past several years of presenting the annual chamber-music festival, Ulrich Grill, a connoisseur of music, a lover of Hohenstaufen, and a festival organizer, had the idea to establish an academy in which young musicians could meet each other and make music together through chamber-music courses held in Hohenstaufen.

Scholarships would be offered to cover not only instruction but also travel costs, room, and board. Sara Rilling, probably best known to festival audiences as a violist, took over its organization, assisted during the transition by Mr. Grill.

Sara Rilling: “in my life as a musician I have spent much time on the road, I have lived in Caracas, I have taught, and I have witnessed how music can bring together and touch people from the most diverse walks of life. As I was planning at the Academy, early on I had the idea that it would be wonderful if young musicians from a variety of cultures could get together and meet in Hohenstaufen.
“I found two outstanding teachers in violinist Virginie Robilliard und cellist Elena Cheah. Together we selected and issued invitations to students from many parts of the world.

“It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm with which they make music together; pedagogy is, of course, an important aspect of this Academy, but even more important is meeting others, playing together, and the music itself.”

For the second year Sara Rilling has again assembled a fine team of instructors in violinist Simon Golloand and cellist Elena Cheah.

The first year of the Academy closed with a concert given by the instructors in the city church of Göppingen and two Academy concerts in the Evangelical Church of Hohenstaufen, featuring young musicians from Israel, Venezuela, Estonia, France, Lebanon, Cuba, Spain, and Italy.

The second Hohenstaufen International Chamber-Music Academy took place in Easter tide 2013; participants from South America, the middle east and Germany have been invited.
